On November 28, the First International Symposium on the Translation and Cultural Communication of Chinese Wushu (Martial Arts) organized by Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu Translation, a specialized academic research institute jointly organized by the Office of Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPC Henan Provincial Committee and Henan University of Technology, was successfully held at Henan University of Technology.
11月28日，由中共河南省委外事工作委员会办公室与河南工业大学共建的河南省少林功夫外译研究中心联合主办的“2020首届中国武术文化外译与传播国际研讨会”在河南工业大学成功举行。

Shaolin Kungfu is not only a treasure of Chinese culture, but also a platform to popularize Chinese culture worldwide. In June of 2019, Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu Translation proposed by Henan University of Technology was authorized by the Office of Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPC Henan Provincial Committee after elaborate preparation and strict procedures, and on November 29, the Inauguration of Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu and the 1st Wushu Culture Translation and International Communication Forum (Henan) were concurrently held at Henan University of Technology. This is the first center co-established by university and provincial government on Shaolin Kungfu translation project, which initiated the first cooperation of the translation work of "Shaolin Kungfu" as a part of the "Chinese Civilization -- Stories from Henan" series, a highlight of the Project of "Translating Henan".
少林功夫文化是中华文化的重要瑰宝，也是中国文化“走出去”的重要名片。经过长期筹备与申报，河南工业大学于2019年6月获中共河南省委外事工作委员会办公室共建河南省首个少林功夫外译研究中心的批复，并于2019年11月29日下午成功举办了“河南省少林功夫外译研究中心”揭牌仪式暨“河南省首届武术文化外译与国际传播高峰论坛”，积极承担“翻译河南”工程项目“中华源河南故事”中外文系列丛书“少林功夫卷”的英文译写工作。

At the symposium, Yang Weibin, inspector of Office of Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPC Henan Provincial Committee, director of the Provincial Foreign Translation Committee and deputy director of the Foreign Discourse System Research Committee of the Translators Association of China, not only praised the contributions of Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu Translation in international communication since its founding, but also the high-quality translation work of "Shaolin Kungfu" by the team from Henan University of Technology. He pointed out that the symposium would play an active role in giving full play to the academic advantages of university, attracting experts and scholars' research interest at home and abroad, promoting foreign language education & teaching quality, translation study development, as well as cultivation of intercultural communication ambassadors & international talents.
在会上，中共河南省委外事工作委员会办公室巡视员、省涉外翻译指导委员会主任、中国翻译协会对外话语体系研究委员会副主任杨玮斌对“河南省少林功夫外译研究中心”自成立以来，立足中原文化、致力对外交流表示肯定，对河南工业大学组织团队高质量完成“中华源河南故事”中外文系列丛书“少林功夫卷”的英文译写工作表示赞扬。他指出，本次会议的举办对发挥高校学科优势、聚集国内外专家学者、对于促进外语教育教学、翻译学术研究、跨文化沟通使者、国际化人才培养起积极推动作用。

For fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic, Roman Vlasenko, executive president of Latvian Sports Wushu Federation, organized groups of Latvian Wushu fans to practice Tai Chi and record videos to encourage Chinese people, confessing the friendly feelings of the Latvian people towards Chinese people.
疫情期间，拉脱维亚运动武术联合会执行主席罗曼·弗拉先科（Roman Vlasenko）曾带领拉脱维亚武术爱好者以集体演练太极拳的方式，录制激励视频，鼓励中国人民抗击疫情，展现了拉脱维亚人民对中国人民的友好情谊。

Shen Xiaokai, economic and commercial counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Latvia, remarked with this case that the global popularity of Wushu is the concrete embodiment of a community with a shared future for mankind. Wushu translation is not only a way of language conversion, but also a task of globalization. It is hoped that this symposium could play an active role in boosting the Wushu translation quality and promoting its development globally.
中国驻拉脱维亚大使馆经济商务参赞沈晓凯以此为例并指出，武术的国际发展与交流正是践行人类命运共同体理念的具体体现。武术翻译在实现语言文字转换的同时，还肩负着武术国际推广的重任，希望本次研讨会能够在提升武术翻译水平与能力、促进武术的国际发展方面发挥积极作用。

积极探索提升武术文化的国际传播能力
Li Huanfeng, vice president of Henan University of Technology, stressed that, Henan, located in Central China and middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, is not only the most populous province in China, but also a province with strong economy, agriculture, emerging industry and education. Amongst the 5,000-year history of the Chinese civilization, Henan has been the country's political, economic and cultural center for over 3,000 years. More than 20 dynasties established or moved their capitals here. Henan is also rich in tourism resources. Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Yin Ruins in Anyang and the historic monuments of Dengfeng in the "Center of Heaven and Earth" have been inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kungfu are famous around the world, and Shaolin Wushu is also the representative of Chinese Wushu.
河南工业大学副校长李焕锋教授在致辞中表示，河南地处华夏腹地，黄河中下游，是全国第一人口大省，也是重要的经济大省、农业大省、新兴工业大省和教育人口大省。河南历史悠久，文化灿烂，是中华民族的重要发祥地之一，在中华文明5000年发展史中有3000多年是全国的经济、政治、文化中心，先后有20多个朝代建都或迁都于此。河南还是全国旅游大省，旅游资源丰富。洛阳龙门石窟、安阳殷墟、登封“天地之中”历史建筑群被列入世界文化遗产。“天下第一名刹”嵩山少林寺和少林功夫闻名中外，少林武术更是中华武术的代表。

The "Belt and Road" Initiative has created unprecedented opportunities for disseminating Chinese culture to the world. Li Huanfeng reviewed the outstanding achievements of Henan University of Technology in the Project of "Translating Henan" since the establishment of Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu Translation, and the breakthroughs the university had made in the projects funded by the national social science foundation, authoritative journals and construction of philosophy & social science research base. Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu Translation needs to better cooperate with the China-aid training programs launched by the Ministry of Commerce at Henan University of Technology, the only authorized university in Henan, to actively explore ways to strengthen international dissemination of Wushu culture, promote cross-disciplinary academic research,integration of foreign language disciplines and cultural transmission. It is hoped that the experts and scholars at the symposium could further promote the development of Wushu culture through this opportunity and sparkle new inspirations for the spread of Chinese Wushu culture

After the opening ceremony, 9 experts and scholars, including Huang Youyi (vice-president of China Academy of Translation), Li Defeng (professor, PhD supervisor and chair of Center for Translation Studies of University of Macau), Li Yindong (professor of the School of Wushu, Beijing Sport University), Li Dechao (associate professor and deputy head of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies of Hong Kong Polytechnic University and editor-in-chief of Translation Quarterly), Roman Vlasenko (executive president of Latvian Sports Wushu Federation), Fernando Huanacuni Mamani (former foreign minister of Bolivia from 2017 to 2019), Karl-Heinz Pohl (founder and dean of the Department of Chinese Studies, University of Trier, Germany), Paul Bowman (editor-in-chief of Cardiff University Press and director of the AHRC-funded Martial Studies Arts Research) and Jiao Dan (executive chair of Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu Translation and president of School of Foreign Languages, Henan University of Technology), delivered keynote speeches.

They discussed the study on the translation and dissemination of Chinese Wushu culture in the new era, covering the translation of Wushu literature, review and reflection of Chinese Wushu in the bid for the Olympics, the invention of Wushu around the world, standardization of Wushu-related terminologies, study on Wushu discourse and construction of Wushu discourse system, a corpus-based analysis of stylistic similarities between Wushu fiction and chivalric romance, the philosophy of Chinese Wushu, C-E translation methods and strategies of Chinese Wushu, the relationship between Wushu and national image construction, etc.
他们就新时代创新背景下中国武术文化外译与传播问题研究进行了探讨，发言涵盖武术文学的外译传播史、中国武术申奥的历史回顾与反思、武术在世界各国的历时性演进研究、武术术语外译标准化研究、武术话语研究与武术话语体系构建、基于语料库语言学视角的武侠小说和骑士文体相似性研究、武术哲学思辨、中国武术英译策略与方法研究、武术与国家形象构建关系研究等。
It is learned that the symposium held both online and offline attracted nearly 2,000 experts, scholars, teachers and students from more than 100 universities at home and abroad. In the future, focusing on the dissemination of Chinese cultural stories and the establishment of a discourse system with Chinese characteristics, Henan Provincial Research Center for Shaolin Kungfu Translation will continue to enrich the cultural connotation of Wushu, enhance its international communication and standardize its translation to promote the inheritance and development of Chinese Wushu culture.
据了解，本次会议采取线上线下结合的方式进行，来自国内外百余所高校近2000名专家、学者、师生共同见证学术盛宴直播和会议线上线下互动。今后，河南省少林功夫外译研究中心将继续以讲好中国文化故事、构建中国特色话语体系为重要内容，丰富中国武术文化内涵，提升武术文化的国际传播与外译能力，助推中国武术文化的传承与发展。（中文来源/大河网 翻译/赵汉青 审校/焦丹）
